NLHG: Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

This week marks 3DS week due to the impending relaunch of the console this Friday.  It is for that reason I have decided to induct my first 3DS game to NLHG, this feels rather weird as the console was on released the back-end of March in the UK but oh well here it goes.

“As the commander of the Ghosts, the most elite special operations fighting force in the world, your mission is to stop the Russian ultranationalist Yuri Treskayev from coming to power. From the hot deserts of Kazakhstan to the towns and villages of Ukraine and the frozen lands of Siberia, you must discover and disable the secret Soviet-era “Dead Hand” bases which Treskayev is using to build an army of drones to seize power. You will have access to full resources to build, train, and equip your team, using increasingly high -tech weapons and armor. ” (Plot summary by

Pew Pew Pew!

It was the first game I bought for the 3DS after reading about it on Kotaku, I’d never played a game in the Ghost Recon series and frankly it didn’t appeal to me.  This game changed that.  With a new tactical strategy type gameplay akin to Fire Emblem or Advance Wars GRSW has a great mix of story and gameplay.  The characters may seem generic at first but you really begin to love them, their interactions is something you’d expect from a mid 90s action movie, but that doesn’t bother me at all.

In addition to that there’s a multiplayer and skirmish option as well as the best sound out there on the 3DS.  Visually the game in 3D works surprisingly well giving a real sense of depth in a natural way.  You can pick this game up pretty cheap if you shop around.
